This special election now goes to a runoff. With four candidates in the race, the lone Republican earned 39% of the vote and the three Democrats picked up the rest. Dr. Mike VanDeWalle (R) will now face Celia Israel (D) in the runoff. In yesterday’s special, the results were VanDeWalle 39%, Israel 32%, Jade Chang Sheppard 16%, and Rico Reyes 13%.
This district is known to be a strong Democratic district, so it is expected that Celia Israel now has a very good chance of winning the runoff.
