Councilwoman Elisa Chan announced Friday she’s leaving the council to run for Texas Senate, challenging District 25 state Sen. Donna Campbell, R-New Braunfels, in the March GOP primary.

Immersed in controversy over her stance against the city’s new non-discrimination ordinance, Chan is taking on a first-term incumbent with strong tea party backing. The district covers parts of six counties including Bexar.

“Misguided policies pushed from Washington are steadily degrading our quality of education, our family values and even our ability to defend ourselves from violent criminals. We must have a strong and effective voice to counter those forces and push the frontiers of freedom forward,” Chan said in a campaign announcement issued Friday afternoon.
