Attorney Ina Minjarez outpaced three other candidates in Tuesday’s special election to fill the Texas House District 124 seat vacated by José Menéndez, but she didn’t achieve a majority and must face Delicia Herrera in a runoff.

Herrera, a former councilwoman, qualified for the runoff by outdistancing firefighterNathan Alonzo. Finishing a distant fourth was David L. Rosa. All four are Democrats.

Menéndez vacated the West Side seat last month when he joined the Texas Senate, where he replaced former state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, D-San Antonio, who’s running for mayor of San Antonio.

Gov. Greg Abbott will set a runoff date later this month.
