AUSTIN — State Rep. Joe Farias, D-San Antonio, formally resigned his Texas House seat in a letter to the governor on Monday.

Farias, who was first elected in 2006, wrote in his letter that his resignation was effective immediately. Gov. Greg Abbott will have to call a special election for his seat in San Antonio, which has seen a spew of such elections recently.

“Through consultation with my wife Angie, I have decided not to fulfill my full term and resign,” Farias said in a statement. “It is my hope to enjoy more time with my family who’ve always been most important to me, but often not prioritized.”

Farias said earlier this year that he would not seek reelection. A U.S. Army veteran, Farias emerged as a key figure on several veteran issues in past sessions — including more recently a fight to preserve the Hazlewood Act.
